ABSTRACT

As part of the special educational needs (SEN) policy of the school, consideration should be given to how the school might enable parents to meet one another, and to meet together with the school, on either a formal or an informal basis, to discuss SEN issues in particular. The requirements of the Code, in terms of staff time and administration, as well as the actual identification and assessment of pupils' special educational needs, combined to impose almost intolerable pressures at a time when teachers were already screaming under the workloads imposed by the National Curriculum. As with many other jobs within the governing body, it is important that the SEN Governor is not isolated, that other governors have an understanding of the general issues surrounding SEN, and can act as deputies or assistants in carrying out the specific duties of the SEN Governor.
