ABSTRACT

Although this text has a focus on the western city, this chapter will consider cities in other parts of the world which are products of the global process of urbanization. It is still possible to classify cities as ‘Third World’, ‘socialist’ and ‘colonial’, but these are categories of convenience. First, no one category is independent of the others; the key processes of urbanization and globalization are shared. Second, the categories are broad and contain considerable internal diversity. The term ‘Third World’ is adopted, though modern usage favours ‘North’ and ‘South’.
