ABSTRACT

In all cities there is a close interactive relationship between the transportation network, the urban morphology and the spatial patterns of urban functions. Behaviour in the city, such as journeys to work, shopping trips, visits to health centres and to leisure facilities, is also closely related to the system of urban transport. In fact, the efficient functioning of the city is directly dependent upon the efficiency of the components of the urban transportation system. During the process of economic development the evolving system both connects the various functional elements of the urban fabric and directs the pattern of urban growth. A generalized evolutionary sequence is portrayed for the western city (Figure 7.1), and this is closely associated with innovations in transport technology (Figure 7.2).
