ABSTRACT
The dichotomy of cities in space and city as place is well established in urban geography. Within the traditional set of theories concerned with city as place, some are indigenous to geography, others are derivative. Urban morphology, with its origins in site-situation studies, analyses of the built fabric of the city and change over time, has strong claims to be an indigenous theory and is an example of continuity within urban geography.
