ABSTRACT

One of the central ideas in this book is that career progression can be seen as periods of routine interspersed with turning points. Helen's story illustrates this idea. We follow her training through two different turning points and the periods of routine that followed each of them. We begin with Helen's successful attempt to secure a place as a trainee in car body repairing. This is followed by a period when she worked on that training programme. She was placed in a local garage for four days per week, with a regular day a week in a local FE college. However, long before her training was complete, Helen was made redundant. We explore her second turning point as she changed careers and took up a training place in a local record shop. Finally we see how, once in the shop, her view of her own career identity changed and car body repairing became a hobby rather than a career.
