ABSTRACT

The National Curriculum states that all children regardless of ability are entitled to a broad, balanced programme of Physical Education.

The revised National Curriculum for Physical Education (DfE 1995) provides teachers with much greater flexibility to respond to the needs of pupils with identified special educational needs. The statement on access in the section on Common Requirements increases the scope for teachers to provide such pupils with appropriately challenging work at each key stage. This should help to reduce the instances where the requirements of the National Curriculum need to be modified or disapplied for a pupil, either temporarily by the head teacher's direction or through a statement of special educational needs.
