ABSTRACT
The identification of difficulties should be done earlier rather than later. This truism is at the heart of screening initiatives, whether in the medical or the educational domain. In this chapter we shall examine the various factors which need to be considered when developing and implementing a screening procedure, and in evaluating its effectiveness. We shall explore the extent to which a system applied to children on school entry at the age of about five years can identify children's difficulties and special educational needs.
