ABSTRACT

This resulted from development work with an LEA learning support team who wanted to provide targets and strategies for primary schools in relation to Reading in the National Curriculum. The result is being used by schools as support material to enable class teachers to become more involved in writing and delivering IEPs.

Aim: to behave like a reader

Target: to look at a book independently for five minutes at a time

Aim: to pretend to read

Target: to join in paired reading with an adult or a peer

Aim: to know how a book works

Target: to look at the text and illustrations when participating in a shared reading activity

Aim: to select an appropriate reading book

Target: to express a preference for the kind of book or a particular book he/she would like to have read to him/her
