ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the various facets of leadership, coordination and management that make for effective inclusion of pupils with disabilities, but also with improvement of quality of life and education for all pupils. Confronting the issues for pupils with disabilities more often than not offers an invaluable opportunity to examine the quality of education generally in a school. Good-quality education means maximum achievable consistency throughout a child’s or young person’s educational experience. This is not to be confused with uniformity or a reduction to a minimum, arbitrary or limited view of ‘standards’. A child or young person who cannot participate fully in their local community will often have equal difficulty accessing education and its potential benefits. Leadership, management, coordination and teamwork are essential components in providing good-quality education and quality of life for all pupils and students, but particularly for this group.
