ABSTRACT

There are several aspects of photography which concern us in the primary school in considering the making of images, and the use and understanding of the work of experts in the field. We deal in school with both still and moving images. Photography also offers, particularly with still images, the potential to use others’ work to manipulate, recompose and rearrange, to make new images in montage (collage) form, or to use other media on top of a photograph or photocopied image to change its appearance and meaning. This is less accessible for moving images, because editing facilities are rarely available in primary schools, although selecting extracts for viewing by fast forwarding on the video player can be seen as similar: a modification or edit of the original is achieved.
