ABSTRACT

The transition from primary to secondary level requires very careful consideration, particularly if the child has been in mainstream school at primary level. As Table 2.1 shows, the child is most likely to change from a mainstream school to a special school at this age. This may not necessarily be because the child cannot cope adequately at an intellectual level. Often behavioural problems or emotional immaturity become more apparent, and allowances need to be made for the fact that youngsters are unable to keep up on a social and emotional level with their peers. This becomes increasingly obvious as other children reach puberty, and the child with PWS may often be very delayed in this area.
