ABSTRACT

One school decided to take this whole issue of noticing and rewarding the 'middle plodder' pupil very seriously. They devised the following chart. The class sheet (Figure 6.1) is taken from one lesson to the next by selected pupils. It is placed on the teacher's desk and s/he notes any outstanding behaviour in the 'excellent' column and any unacceptable behaviour in the' disappointing' column. The rest are automatically good. In reality, this is very little effort since the majority of pupils are 'good' i.e. they arrive on time, remain mostly on task without interfering with or disrupting anyone else's learning, and have done their homework.
