ABSTRACT

The programme of study for history identifies its distinctive contribution as engaging with the past through critical enquiry in order to understand cultural diversity and in this context to clarify personal choices, attitudes and values. there are also real opportunities for exciting history education. This depends on creating thoughtful schemes of work. A scheme of work is defined as overall planned provision for history in a school. It includes both key stage plans and units of work. The rationale for the revised (2000) curriculum claims firstly an enhanced emphasis on flexibility and relevance: in responding to pupils individual differences, strengths, interests, experiences; to their special educational needs; to local priorities. Secondly it emphasises the importance of English, mathematics and Information and Communications Technology in developing the thinking processes central to each subject across a broadly based, coherent and progressive curriculum.
