ABSTRACT
The purpose of this book is to explore the various aspects of mental mathematics and to gain some realisation of how mental mathematics underpins the development of an understanding of many mathematical concepts. In this chapter we introduce a brief survey of some of the main theories related to the teaching and learning of mathematics. As the theories are reviewed comments will be made on the effect that the different theories have had on the way in which learning in schools has developed.
