ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on enhancing the effectiveness of exercises in mental mathematics by discussing strategies that can be used to ensure the involvement of all the children within a supportive classroom ethos. In particular we will focus on strategies for dealing with the following potential areas of difficulty in whole-class teaching:

The risk of children using avoidance strategies.

The risk of children feeling ‘put on the spot’ in whole-class activity.

The difficulty of achieving a pace that is suitable for all.
