ABSTRACT

As considered in the previous chapter one of the big ideas in the later years of primary schooling is the development of security with multiplicative place value with whole numbers and developing a feeling for structure and structural relationships. So in this chapter we explore the nature of multiplication and suggest some activities which aim to help the pupils to build up firm multiplicative concepts. We have focused on the way new concepts are represented for the pupils within the topic of multiplication and division and have indicated the way in which the concepts are approached in some other countries.
