ABSTRACT

Successful schools seem to have ways of working that encourage feelings of involvement. This provides support for the school’s efforts as well as a range of additional resources that can be used to enhance learning opportunities. It also creates a strong sense of community identity that encourages a commitment to achieving high standards. In this chapter we examine the following ideas:

The school should have policies for encouraging involvement of pupils, staff, parents, governors and community.

Participation has to be encouraged by procedures.

Access needs to be facilitated by the creation of an open climate.

The involvement of external support agencies has to be planned carefully.
