ABSTRACT

Teachers in a number of different settings may find this book helpful. It is designed to provide guidance on implementing the National Numeracy Strategy (NNS), whether you work in a mainstream or special school setting. The book is divided into seven chapters.

Chapter 1 describes how this book can be used and how it relates to the NNS framework.

Chapter 2 explains what numeracy means for pupils with special educational needs and the key concepts that need to be taught.

Chapter 3 covers some of the questions our teachers have asked and the guidance we have given. It also considers challenges of including pupils with a wide range of needs within the strategy. It offers guidance on teaching strategies for various types of special needs.

Chapter 4 includes a substantial section on questions that teachers can use to develop pupils mathematically.

Chapter 5 contains a breakdown of the 11 key reception objectives from the NNS into specific learning objectives, which match each of the pre level 1 descriptors (distributed to schools by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in December 1998). The objectives have been ordered into the four strands of the NNS framework. This will help teachers ensure breadth and balance when planning for mathematics. (Handling data is covered within problem solving.)

Chapter 6 describes examples of activities and resources to teach these objectives to pupils. Resources suitable for pupils at Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 are described.

Chapter 7 contains examples of the way the guidance in this book has been used to support teachers long, medium and short-term planning.
