ABSTRACT

In the late spring of 2000, a document commissioned by the QCA and entitled Curriculum Guidelines for Pupils Attaining Significantly Below Age-Related Expectation (Tilstone et al. 2000) was circulated to a number of special schools as part of a consultation exercise. The content of that document did not seek to challenge whether the National Curriculum was an appropriate curriculum for pupils with SLD/PMLD, but concentrated instead upon improving the access of pupils with SLD/PMLD to that curriculum by the use of P levels. The consultation document described advantages to be gained from pupils with SLD/PMLD following the same curriculum framework as their non-disabled peers and also suggested that the National Curriculum provided a good starting point for planning the whole curriculum in SLD schools.
