ABSTRACT

In this chapter we draw together some important themes relating to non-fiction work in the classroom, by emphasising a systematic interpretation of the National Literacy Strategy and indicating ways of building on this. We begin by exploring three factors that promote successful classroom work: the use of texts that interest children and are relevant to their everyday life; the integration of work on text types in different curriculum areas; and an approach that encourages children to talk and think about texts, to read and act upon them, and to experiment with writing them. The chapter concludes with suggestions for extending work on non-fiction with a particular emphasis on media sources.
