ABSTRACT

In 1997 we published a communication assessment framework in which the first few years of early development were subdivided into four bands (Latham & Miles 1997). As we used the assessment, it became increasingly apparent that although each band was focused on communication development, there were clear links to cognitive development. This implied that the learning style which was most appropriate for communication skills was also right for developing cognition. We were aware of the debate concerning the link between communication and cognition and decided to explore this idea further.
