ABSTRACT

Some aspects of middle management are less exciting than others but are nevertheless important in contributing to the successful running of a primary school. How well a school is organised vitally affects the lives of teachers and other employees and the education of the children. If administration and resource management are not efficient, stress and loss of morale will result. Indeed, even visionary and supportive team leaders will lose the respect of colleagues if their exciting ideas fail because of poor day-to-day organisation. It is not surprising, therefore, that the TTA includes the following competence in its document on National Standards for Subject Leaders: ‘Subject leaders identify appropriate resources for the subject and ensure that they are used efficiently, effectively and safely’ (TTA 1998).
