Observation is a powerful tool for assessing and monitoring a teacher's progress. Used well, it can also be a way to support teachers, because observation gives such a detailed picture and enables very specific targets to be set. The value of observation, however, depends on how well it is planned, executed and discussed afterwards (Hagger and McIntyre 1994, p.10).1t is almost always a stressful experience, not only for the teacher but also for the observer. The fewer observations a teacher has the greater the pressure for them to go well. They also need to be conducted fairly so that teachers like Paul and Jane are treated equally.
