ABSTRACT

As anyone who has ever started a new job will know, it can take considerable time to ‘settle in’ and become a productive worker: time to find out what happens in a particular institution, who to approach for help/support/everyday items, and who has responsibility for what. The same is true for children starting at school. One of the main functions of school is to create an environment in which learning can take place. Unless children feel comfortable and confident in their school environment, then this fundamental objective is less likely to be achieved. This is likely to involve a high initial investment of time and energy, but will pay excellent dividends later for all concerned. This chapter clarifies what children need to know in their first days and weeks that will make them feel more at ease and more receptive to the learning opportunities presented to them. We look at ways in which this can be taught so that there is little room for doubt as to what happens and what is expected.
