ABSTRACT

The third and final stage of the performance management cycle is the annual review of the teacher’s performance. The team leader and the teacher will use the objectives recorded at the planning meeting (Stage 1) as a focus for discussions on the teacher’s achievements. The review will also serve as an opportunity to identify and respond to development needs. The annual review will be combined with agreeing objectives for the following performance management cycle. The review discussion should provide an opportunity for genuine dialogue and involve:

further consideration, if necessary, of the job description;

review of the teacher’s work, including successes and areas for development identified since the planning and setting objectives;

discussion of professional development needs;

discussion of career development, if applicable;

discussion of the teacher’s contribution to the policies and management of the school, and any constraints which the circumstances of the school place on him or her;

identification of objectives for future action and development; and

clarification of the points to be included in the review statement.
