ABSTRACT

Here we are again! Just when you thought you had GCSE investigations sorted out, the National Curriculum created an attainment target, Mai, Using and Applying Mathematics, which over the years has itself undergone various minor transformations. The current Orders for the National Curriculum (DfEE 1999b), Curriculum 2000, have integrated Mai into each of the areas of the programmes of study, but it is still recognisable under the three strands of problem-solving, communication and reasoning. Now the NNS emphasises the use of ‘thinking skills’ and we have to reconnect the old words with the new labels.
