ABSTRACT

Studies of effective departments or subject areas have shown that they tend to be well organised with efficient systems for recording and reviewing progress. They place a high emphasis on maintenance and are good at the day-to-day routine management tasks and requirements. At the other end of the spectrum is the visibly failing department which is low on development and low on maintenance. These departments or subject areas are poor at the day-to-day management tasks and tend to be last minute in their approach to deadlines or problem solving. Stuck departments are those that undertake all the necessary maintenance activities but neglect developmental work. These departments or subject areas are not obviously failing as they appear to be efficiently run. Dynamic departments or subject areas tend to be those that approach new developments with great enthusiasm and are viewed within the school in a positive way.
