SRE is delivered using a range of methods. Research with young people shows that they are unhappy with SRE that uses traditional didactic methods (Thomson and Scott 1991). When asked, a group of year 5 children said: ‘It needs to be fun, you need to be able to have a go/Young people often feel that they are ‘talked to’ in SRE. They want to discuss different ideas and learn from each other (Sex Education Forum 2000). ‘It would be helpful to have more role-plays, more practical things and less worksheets. Involve pupils and have debates and discussions’ (young woman aged 14).
