ABSTRACT

Although all English departments are expected to implement the principles and objectives contained in the Framework for Teaching English: Years 7, 8 and 9 (DfEE (Standards and Effectiveness Unit) 2001a) from September 2001, it is a process that will inevitably take some time to become even moderately successful. This book will attempt to assist English teachers as they confront major issues to do with anomalies between their current and future work, and will offer some possible suggestions for resolving them. English teaching is a partial procedure; it is not undertaken objectively or neutrally. My own prejudices and partialities will be evident as the book proceeds, although I hope that they will act as the starting points for further discussion, and not be simply rejected in those circumstances where they do not elicit immediate compatibility
