ABSTRACT

Dice are cheap to buy, easy to use, and lend themselves to a variety of activities. The following are some ideas that we have found useful. They can also be given to parents as suggestions of ways in which they can help their children at home. This emphasises to parents that children do not need to be filling in worksheets to be learning maths. As they begin to use dice more, pupils, teachers and parents should find it easy to invent their own games. Activity 1

Use two dice numbered 1 to 6. Players take it in turn to throw dice and add the numbers shown. The one with the highest total wins a point. Do this until one player has gained ten points; he or she is the winner.

Activity 2

Play the same game as in Activity 1, but this time the person whose dice have the lowest total wins a point.
