ABSTRACT
Important environmental considerations of relevance to cities occur outside the built-up areas themselves, and often outside city or metropolitan boundaries. These include environmental considerations in the surrounding region which usually comprises large areas defined as (or considered) rural. The inhabitants and the natural resource base of this wider region are usually affected by a series of environmental impacts coming from or influenced by city-based activities or city-generated wastes.
