ABSTRACT

Botswana is a land-locked country with an area of some 576,000 km2 and a mean altitude of 1000m, in the centre of southern Africa. One-third of the country in the east comprises an undulating plain with upstanding hill massifs developed on ancient precambrian rocks, commonly termed the hardveld, whilst the remaining two-thirds is covered by sediments of the Kalahari Group, mostly Kalahari Sand. This area is termed the sandveld.
