ABSTRACT

Tanzania has a total surface area, including lakes, of some 945,000 km2 and a land area of some 886,000 km2. The present overall population density is relatively low, 25 persons per km2, but it varies in rural districts from under two in Mpanda (Rukwa) to over 200 in some highland districts and around Mwanza. Tanzania exhibits large variations in environmental and climatic conditions which are some of the main factors influencing crop and livestock production and population distribution (Havnevik et al., 1988).
