ABSTRACT

Newcastle City Council has proved successful in the areas where it has direct influence. It has set an excellent example in managing its own buildings, and from this is able to offer advice and demonstrations of successful building energy management. It has solved the problem of waste management and produced a commercially viable fuel for important energy users. It is nationally known for its marketing of energy conservation principles through the Energy Management and Information Unit (EMIU) and the voluntary agencies which it helps. The local energy projects are mainly concerned with urban waste energy management, buildings and institutional and organizational management. Presently the energy utilities are changing from state to private sector monopolies. These will steadily be opened to more competition, halting the high level of energy prices. Industry uses 48 per cent of electricity and the domestic sector 55 per cent of gas, with very little oil or coal used at all.
