ABSTRACT

Cadiz is situated in the south of Spain in the Andalusian region. It has an average population of 150,000 inhabitants, fluctuating between the summer and winter seasons. It may be regarded as a medium-size town in the Spanish context, with quite some potential for urban energy-environmental policy. The local administration is responsible for the organization of public services such as transport, solid waste, water supply, street lighting and electricity supply and distribution. Cadiz is fed by the national electricity system of the Sevillana de Electricidad. The tension is transformed to 28 Kv, then 6 Kv and finally 220 v. The number of subscribers fluctuates between 62,000 and 63,000. There are 5000 light points in the streets. In the present chapter only two urban energy-environmental initiatives will concisely be dealt with: photovoltaic power and sewage treatment. The management and organization of the environmental and energy services in Cadiz are undertaken by common operations.
