ABSTRACT
It is a reasonable assumption that a society that prioritises the production of essential goods, produces these with ever-cleaner technology, and operates to increasingly high standards of energy and resource-use efficiency will make a greater contribution to global sustainability than one that fails on any or all of these grounds. A transition to the foregoing from the current UK position is likely to require some degree of reconstruction of many sectors of economic activity, the industrial base, transport infrastructure and so on.
