ABSTRACT
Asystems approach to sustainability entails considering the various agents interacting in the world as systems. Such an approach involves invoking general principles concerning systems to make inferences about likely and actual interactions between the systems under consideration. These principles can also be used to analyse the observed patterns of interactions between systems. Two particularly important and deeply interconnected phenomena which are common to the kinds of systems which are considered are evolution and adaptation, which form the focus of the present section.
