ABSTRACT

The Red Sea Hills occupy the north-eastern corner of Sudan, bordered to the east by the Red Sea. Covering a total of 219.920km2, the region is dominated by mountainous, hilly or undulating terrain, interspersed with comparatively narrow valleys which are known locally as wadis (or khors). The western edge of the Great Rift Valley forms a high scarp made of old granite which runs from north to south about 20-40km from the coast. The scarp falls away towards the coast, opening up into some large delta areas.
