ABSTRACT

The Earth Summit of June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, officially called the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), has been celebrated as the biggest gathering of heads of state and of government in all human history. More than a hundred top representatives of states came, not counting the hundreds of ministers who also attended. In the end 30,000 people made it to Rio, most of them spending all their time at the multitude of special events held at the Global Forum, which was arranged some 20 km away from the conference site.
