ABSTRACT
Managing woods for timber production should not be seen as an alternative to managing for other purposes but as one of a number of integrated and complementary objectives. Few small woodland owners are interested in timber production alone. Their incentive is more often some form of multipurpose management, with nature conservation or landscape enhancement a high priority. They may be interested, though, to the extent that they want their woods to be self-sustaining and for operations to break even financially.
