ABSTRACT
Smallholder agriculture remains the major source of livelihood for most of the rural poor, yet it is failing to provide a route out of poverty for the majority. Although opinions differ about the severity of environmental problems, current agricultural practices in much of the region are proving unsustainable, particularly in relation to maintaining soil fertility and managing common property resources.
