ABSTRACT
The years between 1954 and 1961 saw rapid political change. Europe emerged from the trauma of post-war reconstruction, and embarked on a period of increasing prosperity. Former colonies were gaining their independence rapidly. New nations grappled with daunting needs – for development, for economic growth, for land management, for social change.
