ABSTRACT

If awareness of environmental problems has increased in society generally, this must also be true of a number of specific actor categories. Scholars and students at universities are hopefully not an exception to this trend. Although, as argued earlier, scientists are not necessarily the first to change their way of thinking, their ideologies and behaviour, it seems reasonable to suggest that the numbers of scientists and students concerned about environmental problems are increasing in most countries. One way of showing concern openly in the scientific community is to start an organization for scholarly co-operation. Environmental concerns have not only influenced the evolutionary patterns of scientific organizations, but have also been influential in the establishment of new associations. I will now highlight some of the events behind the emergence of one such organization, the International Society for Ecological Economics.
