ABSTRACT

The previous assertion that neo-classical economics is not enough leads to the following question: is it possible to ‘socially construct’ an economics that makes it possible to deal more fruitfully with environmental problems? An answer has already been suggested. It is possible to take steps toward the construction of an alternative economics with the help of alternative theoretical perspectives, such as institutional economics. Learning from theoretical perspectives in social sciences other than economics has also been recommended. In addition, listening to and participating in public debate on environmental and other development issues is a third source of ideas for the conceptual framework suggested here. The view that new knowledge comes exclusively from universities and research institutes is thereby rejected.
