ABSTRACT
Most people have some ideas about the meaning of words such as ‘economics’, ‘efficiency’, ‘rationality’. Where do these ideas come from? Everyday talk with friends and colleagues is one possible answer; reading newspapers, listening to the radio and watching television represent other possibilities. Some get their ideas from studying ‘economics’ at school or at university, or perhaps through distance tuition courses, which are becoming increasingly popular.
