ABSTRACT

Sound recording is an art, but too often it is treated as a simple requisite to accompany the picture on screen, and not given the respect and importance it deserves. Look at the range of TV programming. Drama, music programmes, and documentaries that include drama content: they are all created illusions. The sound added to the pictures can create whatever atmosphere the director wishes to convey to the viewer. The simple addition of sound effects or music can create different moods. Often these effects can create a feeling in the listener that is quite the opposite to the displayed picture, perhaps enhancing suspense before the event. Simple production sets can be used, with sound effects and music adding the suggestion of the set's location. By simply adding seaside effects the listener could think that the whole action was by the seaside. Swap these effects to airport effects, and the listener will assume that they are within an airport.
