ABSTRACT
Although we did not set out to study prehistory, fieldwork generated some new and interesting prehistoric data; what happened in the later Iron Age, in particular, has a major bearing on the early historic period and is an essential preface to the “Romans” (Davies & Astill 1994: 229–34, 269–71).
