ABSTRACT

Minamoto Yoshitsune, brother of Yoritomo, cousin of Yoshinaka, and the youngest of the surviving sons of Yoshitomo, now demands our attention. For his military prowess alone, Yoshitsune would still be remembered. Yet legend has woven round his name a web of mystery and romance unequalled by any other who bore the name of samurai. Most of this chapter will therefore be concerned with this outstanding samurai around whom whole books, plays and poems have been written for the past eight hundred years.
