ABSTRACT
A large number of families in Shitayama-cho (23% of the total) are supported by self-employed workers or by joint ^family enterprise. This proportion is by no means above the general average for Japan. Even if the agricultural population is excluded, self-employed workers and unpaid family workers make up almost a third of the total labour force.
