ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will be focusing on individual households and their characteristics, and the key relationship between those characteristics and the context in which households live. This relationship largely determines the vulnerability of households to all internally or externally generated shocks. Since the discussion centres on the Conceptual Model of Vulnerability we present it again to illustrate this relationship (Figure 5.1).
